Read the following passage to answer the following questions:
Proteins are polypeptide chains made up of amino acids. There are 20 types of amino acids joined together by peptide bond between amino and carboxylic group. There are two kinds of amino acids, Essential amino acids and Non-essential amino acids. The Primary structure of protein is the linear sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain. The first amino acid of sequence is called N-terminal amino acids and last amino acid of peptide chain is called C-terminal amino acids. The secondary structure proteins forms helix. There are three types of secondary structure: a helix, P pleated and collagen helix. In tertiary structure long protein chain is folded upon itself like a hollow woollen ball to give three-dimensional view of protein. In quaternary structure, each polypeptide develops its own tertiary structure and function as subunit of protein.
Q. The tertiary structure of a protein contains
  • a)
    Hydrogen bonds
  • b)
    Peptide bonds
  • c)
    Ionic bonds and S-linkage
  • d)
    All of the above

Tertiary Structure of a Protein

The tertiary structure of a protein refers to the three-dimensional arrangement of amino acid residues within a single polypeptide chain. This structure is crucial for the protein's function and stability.

Components of Tertiary Structure

- Hydrogen Bonds: These weak bonds form between the hydrogen atom of one amino acid and the oxygen or nitrogen atom of another amino acid. They help stabilize the protein structure.
- Peptide Bonds: These covalent bonds link amino acids together in a polypeptide chain. They are not specific to tertiary structure but are essential for the overall protein structure.
- Ionic Bonds and S-Linkages: Ionic bonds form between positively and negatively charged amino acid side chains, while S-linkages involve the bonding of sulfur atoms in cysteine residues. These interactions contribute to the folding and stabilization of the protein.

Importance of Tertiary Structure

- The tertiary structure determines the protein's overall shape and allows it to carry out its specific function.
- Proper folding into a three-dimensional structure is essential for the protein to interact with other molecules and perform its biological roles effectively.

In conclusion, the tertiary structure of a protein is maintained by a combination of various bonds and interactions, including hydrogen bonds, peptide bonds, ionic bonds, and S-linkages. These elements work together to create a stable and functional protein molecule.
