Bhangar and Khadar

Bhangar and Khadar are two types of alluvial soils found in the Indo-Gangetic plain. These soils are formed due to the deposition of sediments by rivers. While both these soils are fertile, they have different properties and characteristics.

Bhangar

Bhangar soil is an older alluvial soil found in the upper reaches of river valleys. It is usually found at a higher altitude and is more consolidated than Khadar soil. Bhangar soil is characterized by the following:

- Bhangar soil is a well-drained soil that is less prone to waterlogging.
- It is a sandy soil that is rich in lime and potash.
- Bhangar soil is relatively infertile as it lacks nitrogen and organic matter.
- This soil is suitable for growing crops like wheat, maize, and pulses.

Khadar

Khadar soil is a newer alluvial soil found in the lower reaches of river valleys. It is usually found at a lower altitude and is more prone to flooding. Khadar soil is characterized by the following:

- Khadar soil is a poorly drained soil that is prone to waterlogging.
- It is a clayey soil that is rich in nitrogen and organic matter.
- Khadar soil is very fertile and is suitable for growing crops like rice, sugarcane, and jute.
- This soil needs less fertilizers and is more suitable for crops that need more water.
