Assertion and Reasoning

Assertion (A): Every year the government fixes a target for disinvestment of Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs).

Reason (R): Disinvestment is an excellent tool for discarding the loss incurred by Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs).

The correct answer is option B, i.e., both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct explanation of assertion (A).

Explanation

Assertion (A) states that every year the government sets a target for disinvestment of Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs). This assertion is true as the government of India follows a policy of disinvestment in PSEs to reduce the fiscal burden and to promote efficiency and competitiveness in the economy.

Reason (R) states that disinvestment is an excellent tool for discarding the loss incurred by PSEs. This reason is also true as disinvestment helps to reduce the burden of losses on the government and to promote efficiency in the PSEs by bringing in private sector participation.

However, reason (R) is not the correct explanation of assertion (A) as the government sets a target for disinvestment for multiple reasons, not just to discard losses incurred by PSEs. Some of the other reasons for disinvestment are:

- To raise funds for social welfare schemes and infrastructure development
- To promote competition and efficiency in the economy
- To reduce the fiscal deficit
- To encourage wider public participation in the ownership of PSEs

Thus, while both assertion and reason are true, reason (R) does not fully explain assertion (A).
