Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
All chemical reactions involve interaction of atoms and molecules. A large number of atoms/molecules are present in a few grams of any chemical compound varying with their atomic/molecular masses. To handle such large numbers conveniently, the mole concept was introduced. All electrochemical cell reactions are also based on mole concept. For example, a 4.0 molar aqueous solution of NaCl is prepared and 500 mL of this solution is electrolysed. This leads to the evolution of chlorine gas at one of the electrode. The amount of products formed can be calculated by using mole concept.
The following questions are multiple choice questions. Choose the most appropriate answer:
Q. In electrolysis of NaCl when Pt electrode is taken then H2 is liberated at cathode while with Hg cathode it forms sodium amalgam :-
  • a)
Hg is more inert than Pt
  • b)
More voltage is required to reduce H+ at Hg than at Pt
  • c)
Na is dissolved in Hg while it does not dissolve in Pt
  • d)
Conc, of H+ ions is larger when Pt electrode is taken
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

In electrolysis of NaCl when Pt electrode is taken thenH2 is liberated at cathode while with Hg cathode it forms sodium amalgam.
Conc of H+ ions is larger when the Pt electrode is taken. Hence, H+ ions are discharged in preference to Na+ ions. When Hg cathode is used Na+ ions are discharged.

Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:All c...
Explanation:

Concentration of H+ ions:
- The concentration of H+ ions is higher when a Pt electrode is used in the electrolysis of NaCl compared to when a Hg electrode is used.
- This is because Hg has a lower overpotential for hydrogen evolution compared to Pt, leading to a slower rate of hydrogen gas evolution at the Hg electrode.
- As a result, more H+ ions are available in the solution for other reactions to occur, such as the reduction of Na+ to form sodium amalgam.

Formation of Sodium Amalgam:
- When a Hg electrode is used in the electrolysis of NaCl, sodium ions are reduced at the electrode to form a sodium amalgam.
- This is because Hg is more reactive towards sodium compared to hydrogen, leading to the formation of sodium amalgam on the Hg electrode surface.
- On the other hand, when a Pt electrode is used, the reduction of Na+ to form sodium metal does not occur due to the higher overpotential required for this reaction.

Inertness of Electrodes:
- Hg is more inert than Pt, which means that it is less likely to participate in side reactions during electrolysis.
- This inertness allows for the selective reduction of sodium ions to form sodium amalgam at the Hg electrode without interference from other reactions.
- In contrast, Pt electrodes may catalyze side reactions such as hydrogen evolution, leading to a different product formation during electrolysis.

Voltage Requirement:
- The voltage required to reduce H+ ions to form hydrogen gas is higher at a Hg electrode compared to a Pt electrode.
- This difference in voltage requirement is due to the different overpotentials for hydrogen evolution at the two electrode materials.
- As a result, a higher voltage is needed to drive the reduction of H+ ions at the Hg electrode, favoring other reactions such as the formation of sodium amalgam.
