A boat takes 3 hours more to row upstream than to row downstream for ...
Let the speeds of boat and stream be 'b' and 'r' respectively.
Let the distance travelled upstream or downstream [ Both are same in this case] be 'd'.
Time taken to travel upstream
= d/(b-r) [ Time = Distance/speed, Speed is taken as b - r as the stream will oppose the boat during upstream journey]
Similarly, Time taken to travel downstream
= d/(b+r) [Speed is taken as b + r as the stream will aid the boat]
According to the condition,
d/(b-r) = [d/(b+r)]+3
⇒ d × [1/(b-r)-1/(b+r)] = 3
⇒ d × 2r/(b2-r2) = 3
⇒ 2rd = 3(b2-r2) = 3 × 60 = 180
⇒ rd = 90
Out of the given options, only (d)satisfies this equation.
