Formation of Acetophenone from Benzene

In the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride, benzene reacts with acetyl chloride (CH3COCl) to form acetophenone. The reaction is known as Friedel-Crafts acylation.

Mechanism of Friedel-Crafts Acylation

Step 1: Formation of acylium ion

Anhydrous aluminium chloride (AlCl3) acts as a Lewis acid and accepts a lone pair of electrons from the carbonyl oxygen of acetyl chloride. This leads to the formation of an acylium ion (CH3CO+).

CH3COCl + AlCl3 → CH3CO+ + AlCl4-

Step 2: Attack of benzene on acylium ion

The aromatic ring of benzene acts as a nucleophile and attacks the positively charged acylium ion. This leads to the formation of an intermediate compound (an arenium ion).

CH3CO+ + C6H6 → C6H5COCH3+

Step 3: Removal of proton

The intermediate compound (arenium ion) loses a proton to form the final product, acetophenone.

C6H5COCH3+ → C6H5COCH3 + H+

Thus, the overall reaction can be represented as:

C6H6 + CH3COCl → C6H5COCH3 + HCl

Conclusion

In the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride, benzene reacts with acetyl chloride to form acetophenone via Friedel-Crafts acylation. The reaction involves the formation of an acylium ion, attack of benzene on the acylium ion, and removal of a proton to form the final product.
