Direction: Rearrange the following eight sentences/ group of sentence...
The first sentence in a passage often introduces the main subject or protagonist. Sentence (D) introduces us to an old man who seems to be the protagonist of the story. Therefore, sentence (D) must be the first in the sequence. Our claim is confirmed by the fact that the sentence starts with the word ‘once’ which is here used to the same effect as the phrase ‘once upon a time’. Such phrases always occur in the very first line.
The first sentence gives us information about two things. First, that the protagonist is an old man and second, that his economic condition is deplorable. Sentence (F) continues along the same lines. It tells us the old man’s exact age and talks about his decision to change things. This change is definitely a change in economic status. Therefore, sentence (F) logically follows sentence (D).
The rest of the passage seems to talk about a recipe. A sentence that introduces the recipe must be antecedent to all the rest. Sentence (H) introduces the recipe, therefore, it must be third in sequence. Sentence (H) mentions that the much-loved chicken recipe is the only thing the old man is good at. Sentence (G) says ‘this was his best shot at making a change’. The ‘this’ must be a reference to the chicken recipe. Therefore, sentence (G) follows sentence (H).
Now that we know the old man wishes to use this recipe to help his economic condition, we must look for a sentence that tells us exactly how he does the aforementioned. Sentence (B) tells us this. We are told about how the old man plans to capitalise the recipe. (E) Logically follows (B) since after knowing the offer we are told about how it was rejected many times.
Hence, the correct option is (C).
