Calculating Average Speed and Magnitude of Average Velocity

  • The distance between the boy's home and the market is 2 km and he runs at a speed of 4 kmph. The time taken to reach the market is given by:

    • Time = Distance / Speed = 2/4 = 0.5 hours

  • Now the boy runs back to his home at a speed of 6 kmph. The time taken to reach back home is given by:

    • Time = Distance / Speed = 2/6 = 1/3 hours

  • The total distance covered by the boy is 4 km (2 km to market and 2 km back home). The total time taken is 0.5 + 1/3 = 0.8333 hours.

  • Therefore, the average speed of the boy is given by:

    • Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time = 4 / 0.8333 = 4.8 kmph

  • The magnitude of the average velocity is the total displacement divided by the total time taken. Since the boy returns to his home, his total displacement is zero. Hence, the magnitude of the average velocity is zero.

Calculating Average Speed of Time Intervals

  • From the above calculation, we know that the boy takes 0.5 hours to reach the market and 1/3 hours to come back home. Hence, the total time taken is 0.8333 hours.

  • The time interval from 0 to 30 minutes is 0.5 hours. During this time, the boy runs to the market. Hence, the distance covered is 2 km and the time taken is 0.5 hours.

    • Average Speed = Distance / Time = 2 / 0.5 = 4 kmph

  • The time interval from 0 to 40 minutes is 40/60 = 2/3 hours. During this time, the boy runs to the market and comes back home. Hence, the distance covered is 4 km and the time taken is 2/3 hours.

    • Average Speed = Distance / Time = 4 / (2/3) = 6 kmph
