Kalam's Incidents in Fifth Grade
In fifth grade, Abdul Kalam, who would later become the renowned scientist and former President of India, experienced several significant incidents that shaped his life and inspired him to pursue a career in science and technology. These incidents include:
1. The Paper Boy Incident:
During his fifth-grade year, Kalam worked as a paper boy to support his family financially. One day, while delivering newspapers, he accidentally set fire to a neighbor's thatched roof. This incident left a deep impact on him as he felt a deep sense of guilt and responsibility for his actions.
2. The Lesson from His Teacher:
Kalam had a teacher named Sivasubramania Iyer who taught him the importance of honesty and integrity. One day, when Kalam's teacher was absent, the students were left unsupervised. Some of the students started cheating, but Kalam refused to do so. This incident taught him the value of honesty and the importance of standing up for what is right.
3. The Temple Experiment:
Kalam was always curious about how things worked. One day, while visiting a temple with his friends, he noticed some birds sitting on the temple tower. He wondered how they could perch on the tower without falling. To satisfy his curiosity, he conducted an experiment by placing a few sticks on his terrace and observing the balance. This incident sparked his interest in science and experimentation.
4. The Science Fair:
Kalam's school organized a science fair where students were encouraged to showcase their scientific projects. Kalam decided to make a working model of a windmill, which he successfully accomplished with the help of his cousin. His model impressed everyone at the fair, including his teacher and the chief guest. This incident boosted Kalam's confidence and reinforced his passion for science and innovation.
5. The Donation to His School:
One day, Kalam's teacher informed the class that the school needed funds to purchase new books. Inspired by this, Kalam decided to donate his entire savings from his paper route job towards the cause. This incident reflected his selflessness and commitment to education.
These incidents played a crucial role in shaping Kalam's character and instilling in him a love for learning and a determination to make a difference in the world through science and technology. They laid the foundation for his future achievements and his contributions to India's scientific and technological advancements.
