Verified Answer

Given
Let, speed be x km/hour.
It takes 10 hours to travel the distance.
That means total distance = 10x km
Latter speed =
x(100 – 20)/100 = 4x/5 km/hour
Time taken to cover the whole distance at this speed is 10x/(4x/5) = 12.5 hour
Time increase = (12.5 – 10) hours = 2.5 hours
Percentage increase in time taken =
(2.5/10) × 100 = 25%
Hence, the correct answer is 25%.

Explanation:

Original Speed:
- Let the original speed be S.
- Time taken to cover the distance at the original speed = 10 hours.

Reduced Speed:
- Speed reduced by 20% means the new speed is 0.8S (80% of the original speed).
- Time taken to cover the same distance at the reduced speed = 10 * (1/0.8) = 12.5 hours.

Calculating Percentage Increase in Time:
- Percentage increase in time = ((New time - Original time) / Original time) * 100%
- Percentage increase in time = ((12.5 - 10) / 10) * 100% = 25%.

Therefore, the percentage increase in the time taken to cover the same distance when the speed is reduced by 20% is 25%.
