Curve which changes the alignment of road from downhill to uphill is c...
The correct answer is option 'B' - Sag curve.

Explanation:
A sag curve is a type of curve in the alignment of a road that changes the road profile from a downhill gradient to an uphill gradient. It is characterized by a concave curve in the road, where the road surface dips or sags down and then rises again.

Sag curves are typically used in hilly or mountainous terrains, where the road needs to traverse a steep slope. The purpose of a sag curve is to provide a smooth transition between the downhill and uphill sections of the road, ensuring the safety and comfort of the drivers.

Now, let's understand the concept of a sag curve in more detail.

1. Definition:
- A sag curve is a type of horizontal curve in the alignment of a road that changes the road profile from a downhill grade to an uphill grade.
- It is also known as a valley curve or a vertical curve.

2. Purpose:
- The main purpose of a sag curve is to ensure a smooth transition for vehicles traveling on roads with steep slopes.
- It helps to reduce the abrupt changes in the road gradient, which can be uncomfortable for drivers and may cause accidents.
- By providing a gradual change in the road alignment, a sag curve allows drivers to maintain a consistent speed and control over their vehicles.

3. Design Considerations:
- When designing a sag curve, several factors need to be considered, including the existing terrain, the desired speed of vehicles, and the design standards.
- The length and radius of the sag curve are determined based on the gradient change and the design speed of the road.
- The alignment of the curve should be such that it provides a smooth transition between the downhill and uphill sections.
- The super-elevation, or the banking of the curve, should also be considered to enhance the safety and stability of vehicles.

In conclusion, a sag curve is a type of curve in the alignment of a road that changes the road profile from a downhill gradient to an uphill gradient. It is designed to provide a smooth transition for vehicles traveling on roads with steep slopes.

Curve which changes the alignment of road from downhill to uphill is c...
Vertical curve:
Vertical alignment is the elevation of the centerline of the road. It may be in the form of a circular arc or a parabola
The vertical curve is divided into two categories
Summit curve:
  • It is a crest curve with convexity upward.
  • When an ascending gradient meets with descending gradients the deviation angle will be maximum.

The deviation angle between the two interacting gradients is equal o the algebraic difference between them.
N = n1 – (-n2) = n1 + n2
As Square parabola is the best shape of the summit curve due to good riding qualities, simplicity of calculation, and uniform rate of change of grade.
Valley curve/Sag curve:
The maximum possible deviation angle is obtained when a descending gradient(downhill) meets with an ascending (uphill) gradient.
Valley curves or sag curves are vertical curves with convexity downwards.
The overtaking sight distance is not included in the valley curve.
The cubic parabola is generally preferred.
The headlight sight distance available at the valley curve should be at least equal to the stopping sight distance.
Important Points
Transition curve:
The curve provided on the road or on the rails at the junction of a straight line and a circular curve, whose radius of curvature changes from infinite at the straight line to a fixed value at the circular portion is known as the transition curve.
  • It is provided to change the radius gradually so that the effect of curvature can be reduced on the passengers as well as on the vehicle.
  • It is also used to introduce super-elevation gradually.
Different types of transition curves are adopted by different organizations according to their specific needs and arrangement, such as;
  • Euler's spiral
  • Cubical spiral
  • Cubic parabola
  • Lemniscate curve
