Consider a system having 28 identical printers as a resource R and P processes competing for them. Each process can request at most 5 resources. Which one of the following values of P could lead to a deadlock?
  • a)
    7
  • b)
    8
  • c)
    6
  • d)

Correct answer is option 'A,B'. Can you explain this answer?
Most Upvoted Answer
Consider a system having 28 identical printers as a resource R and P p...
Given,
Available identical resources = R = 28
Max needs per process = 5
We know that,
Deadlock can occur If any process gets available resource < needed (requested) resource.
Now,
Max resource per process to be in deadlock = needed −1
= 5 − 1
= 4
For P process, max resource to be in deadlock = P × 4 = 4P
Condition for deadlock:
4P ≥ R
4P ≥ 28
P ≥ 7
Values of P that could lead to a deadlock are 7 and 8.
Hence, the correct options are (A) and (B).
