Partial Roasting:
The first step in the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is partial roasting. In this process, chalcopyrite is heated in the presence of oxygen at a temperature below its melting point. Partial roasting converts copper sulfide (CuFeS2) to copper oxide (Cu2O) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas.

CuFeS2 (s) + O2 (g) → Cu2O (s) + 2FeO (s) + 2SO2 (g)

Iron Removal:
After partial roasting, the next step is the removal of iron. Iron is present in the form of FeO (iron(II) oxide) in the roasted ore. To remove iron, a flux such as silica (SiO2) is added to form a slag with iron oxide. The equation for the reaction is as follows:

FeO (s) + SiO2 (s) → FeSiO3 (s)

Iron(II) oxide reacts with silica to form iron(III) silicate (FeSiO3), which is a slag. This slag is separated from the molten copper obtained in the next step.

Self-Reduction:
The final step in the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is self-reduction. In this step, the roasted ore (Cu2O) is heated in the absence of air. The copper oxide is reduced to metallic copper (Cu), while the sulfur dioxide gas is released.

Cu2O (s) → 2Cu (s) + SO2 (g)

The metallic copper obtained is further refined and processed to obtain pure copper.
