The greatest negative number which can be stored in a computer that has 8-bits work length and use of 2′s complement arithmetic is −128.
A 2′s complement 8-bit number can only represent positive integers from 0 to 127 (0111111), because the rest of the bit combinations with the most significant bit as '1' represent the negative integers −1 to −128.
In the system having 8-bit word length,
Greatest negative number =−28−1=−128
And largest positive number =28−1−1=127
The difference between the largest positive number and greatest negative number =127− (−128)
=255.
Hence, the correct option is (A).
