The field capacity of a certain soil is 25% and the moisture content of the soil before irrigation is 9%. If the dry unit weight of soil is 18 KN/m³ then the depth (in mm, round off to the nearest integer) up to which soil profile will be saturated with an application of 65mm of water is _____.
  • a)
    221
  • b)
    223
Correct answer is between '221,223'. Can you explain this answer?
Most Upvoted Answer
The field capacity of a certain soil is 25% and the moisture content ...
Moisture content before irrigation = 9%
Water is applied upto depth of 65mm.
Here, γdw = 18/9.81 = 1.83
Depth of Water applied(dw) = [F.C -(moisture content before irrigation)] x γdw x d
65 = (0.25 - 0.09) x 1.83 d
65/0.16 = 1.83 d
d = 221.99 ~ 222 mm
∴ Depth upto which the soil profile will get saturated = 222 mm
