45 km/h
Statement I: A boat can cover ‘D – 5’ km upstream in 1 hour while it takes 48 min to cover ‘D – 6’ km downstream. If ratio of speed of boat in still water to the speed of stream is 10: 1, find the upstream speed of boat.
Statement II: Extra time taken to cover a distance while running with the speed of10 km/h less than the original speed is 24 min while 8.4 min can be saved while running with the speed of 5 km/h more than the original speed, find the original speed.
Statement III: A train can cross a platform of length 150 meters in 25.2 seconds while a pole in 14.4 seconds, find the speed of train.
  • a)
    Only statement I
  • b)
    Only statement III
  • c)
    Both statement I, and III
  • d)

Statement I:
Let speed of boat in still water and speed of stream is ‘10x’ km/h and ‘x’ km/h, respectively.
According to the question:
(D - 5)/(10x - x) = 1
D – 5 = 9x
D = 9x + 5 …………. (1)
(D - 6)/(10x + x) = 48/60 = 4/5
From equation (1):
(9x + 5 - 6)/11x = 4/5
45x – 5 = 44x
x = 5
Upstream speed of boat = 10x – x = 9x = 45 km/h
Statement II:
Let distance covered is ‘D’ km, original speed is ‘S’ km/h, and original time to cover to ‘D’ km with speed ‘S’ km/h is ‘T’ hours.
According to the question:
T = D/S…………. (1)
D/(S - 10) = T + 24/60
From equation (1):
D/(S - 10) = D/S + 2/5
D/(S - 10) - D/S = 2/5
D[(S - S + 10)/S(S - 10) ] = 2/5
D = (2 S (S - 10))/50……………(2)
D/(S + 5) = T - 8.4/60
From equation (1):
D/(S + 5) = D/S - 7/50
D/S - D/(S + 5) = 7/50
D[(S + 5 - S)/S(S + 5) ] = 7/50
D = (7 S (S + 5))/250…….. (3)
From (2) and (3):
(2S(S – 10))/50 = (7 S (S + 5))/250
10S – 100 = 7S + 35
3S = 135
S = 45
Original speed = S = 45 km/h
Statement III:
Let the length of train is ‘D’ meters and speed of train is ‘S’ km/h.
According to the question:
(D + 150)/(S x 5/18) = 25.2…………….. (1)
D/(S x 5/18) = 14.4
D = 4S …………. (2)
From (1) and (2):
(4S + 150)/S = 7
4S + 150 = 7S
3S = 150
S = 50
Speed of train = S = 50 km/h
Hence, both the statements I and II satisfies the value given in the statement.
