The conditions given below are in the context of observing Tyndall eff...
Tyndall effect is based on scattering of light. The smaller the diameter and similar the magnitude of refractive indices, the lesser the scattering and hence the Tyndall effect. If the diameter of the dispersed phase particle is smaller than that of the wavelength of light used, then the scattering of light will not occur. Therefore, the diameter of the dispersed particles should be equal to or not much smaller than the wavelength of light used.
The refractive index refers to the ratio of the velocity of light in vacuum to the velocity of light in any medium. The refractive indices of dispersed phase and the dispersion medium should have greater difference in magnitude in order to scatter the light and to observe the Tyndall effect. If the refractive indices of the dispersed phase and dispersion medium are equal in magnitude, the scattering of light will not occur and it is not possible to observe the Tyndall effect.
Therefore, the appropriate conditions for Tyndall effect are:
  • The diameter of the colloidal particles is comparable to the wavelength of light used.
  • The dispersed phase has a very different refractive index from the dispersion medium.
