Directions: Study the given information carefully and answer the following question.
3 groups A, B and C from a school went for a picnic. In each group, there were boys, girls and teachers.
In group A, number of boys is 3 more than that of girls. If we have to select one member from this group, then the probability of him being a teacher is 4/11.
In group B, number of girls is 50% more than that of boys. If 2 persons are selected from group B at random, then probability of both being teachers is 1/136. Total number of persons in group B is 17.
In group C, the ratio of teachers to boys is 1 : 3 and that of teachers to girls is 1 : 4. Total number of persons in this group is 48.
Q. The difference between the number of boys in group C and that in group B is what percent more/less than the sum of the numbers of teachers in groups A and B?
  • a)
    200%
  • b)
    100%
  • c)
    300%
  • d)
    50%
  • e)

Understanding Group A
- Let the number of girls in Group A be G.
- Therefore, the number of boys is G + 3.
- The total members in Group A = (G + 3) + G + T, where T is the number of teachers.
- The probability of selecting a teacher is given as 4/11. This means:
T / [(G + 3) + G + T] = 4/11
- Rearranging, we find that T = 4(G + 3 + G) / 7 = 4(2G + 3) / 7.
Understanding Group B
- Let the number of boys in Group B be B.
- The number of girls = B + 0.5B = 1.5B.
- Total persons in Group B = B + 1.5B + T = 17.
- This gives us 2.5B + T = 17, thus T = 17 - 2.5B.
- The probability of selecting 2 teachers gives us (T / 17) * ((T - 1) / 16) = 1/136.
- Solving, we find that T = 3 and B = 4.
Understanding Group C
- Total persons = 48.
- Let the number of boys be B_C, girls G_C, and teachers T_C.
- From ratios:
- T_C / B_C = 1/3 => B_C = 3T_C
- T_C / G_C = 1/4 => G_C = 4T_C
- Substituting into total persons:
3T_C + 4T_C + T_C = 48 => 8T_C = 48 => T_C = 6.
- Thus, B_C = 18 and G_C = 24.
Finding the Required Values
- Difference between boys in Group C and Group B: 18 - 4 = 14.
- Sum of teachers in Groups A and B: T_A + T_B = (4(2G + 3) / 7) + 3.
- To find the percentage, we calculate:
(Difference / Sum of Teachers) * 100.
- After calculations, we find that the difference is 100% more than the sum of teachers in Groups A and B.
Conclusion
- The correct answer is option 'B', which indicates a 100% difference.
