Longitudinal Reinforcement:
  • CI. 26.5.3 of IS 456:2000, specifies that the total area of longitudinal bars in a column section must NOT be less than 0.8% of the gross column area. This limit on minimum reinforcement is imposed because of the following reasons:
    • In order to ensure that a minimum flexural resistance of the column exists due to unexpected eccentricities in the column loading.
    • In compression members, creep under sustained loading is very predominant, especially at low percentages of steel. Thus, the resulting creep stress (due to creep strain) tries to yield the bars.
  • Maximum Reinforcement: The maximum area of cross-section of longitudinal bars must NOT exceed 6% of gross column area. However, in practice, a maximum of 4% is recommended.
Additional Information
Diameter and Number of bar:
  • The diameter of longitudinal bars in column NOT be less than 12 mm. These bars must NOT be spaced more than 300 mm apart on the column perimeter.
  • For rectangular columns. a minimum of 4 bars is provided.
  • For Circular columns, a minimum of 6 bars be provided.
Cover = 40 mm or bar diameter

The minimum and maximum percentage of longitudinal reinforcement in a column, expressed as a percentage of the gross cross-sectional area of the column, is provided in the Indian Standard code IS 456:2000. According to this code, the correct answer is option 'C', which states that the minimum percentage is 0.8% and the maximum percentage is 6%.

The reinforcement in a column is provided to enhance its strength and prevent failure due to axial loads and bending. The percentage of reinforcement is determined based on various factors such as the type of structure, the load it will bear, and the material properties.

Below is a detailed explanation of the given answer:

Minimum Percentage of Longitudinal Reinforcement (0.8%):
- The minimum percentage of longitudinal reinforcement is specified to ensure that the column has adequate strength and ductility.
- A minimum of 0.8% reinforcement is required to prevent brittle failure and improve the load-carrying capacity of the column.
- This percentage ensures that the column can withstand the imposed loads and provide sufficient resistance against cracking and deformation.

Maximum Percentage of Longitudinal Reinforcement (6%):
- The maximum percentage of reinforcement is specified to control the cracking and ensure the durability of the column.
- Excessive reinforcement can lead to congestion and inadequate concrete cover, which can result in corrosion and reduced durability.
- By limiting the maximum percentage to 6%, the code ensures that the concrete cover is adequate for protection against corrosion, and the reinforcement is properly spaced to allow for easy placement and compaction of concrete.

It is important to note that the percentages mentioned are general provisions and may vary depending on the specific requirements of the project and the design considerations. Designers and engineers should carefully analyze the structural requirements and consult the relevant design codes and standards to determine the appropriate percentage of reinforcement for a particular column.

In conclusion, according to IS 456:2000, the minimum percentage of longitudinal reinforcement in a column is 0.8% and the maximum percentage is 6%. These percentages aim to provide adequate strength, ductility, and durability to the column while considering factors such as load-carrying capacity, cracking control, and corrosion protection.
