Problem:

The number of 4-digit numbers greater than 5000 can be formed out of the digits 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 (no digits are repeated). The number of such numbers is?

Solution:

To form a 4-digit number greater than 5000, we need to choose the first digit as 5, 6, or 7.

  • If the first digit is 5, the remaining three digits can be chosen in 4P3 ways (permutations of 4 digits taken 3 at a time).

  • If the first digit is 6, the remaining three digits can be chosen in 3P3 ways (permutations of 3 digits taken 3 at a time).

  • If the first digit is 7, the remaining three digits can be chosen in 2P3 ways (permutations of 2 digits taken 3 at a time).

Therefore, the total number of 4-digit numbers greater than 5000 that can be formed out of the digits 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 is:

4P3 + 3P3 + 2P3 = 24 + 6 + 0 = 30

Answer:

The number of 4-digit numbers greater than 5000 that can be formed out of the digits 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 (no digits are repeated) is 30.
