Isomerism in Alkanes

Isomerism is the phenomenon in which two or more compounds have the same molecular formula but different structural formulae due to the difference in the arrangement of atoms within the molecule. Alkanes are the simplest organic compounds composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms with a general formula of CnH2n+2. Alkanes can exhibit different types of isomerism, which are:

1. Chain Isomerism
In chain isomerism, isomers differ in the arrangement of carbon atoms in the parent chain. For example, butane and 2-methylpropane are chain isomers of each other.

2. Position Isomerism
In position isomerism, isomers differ in the position of the functional group or substituent on the carbon chain. For example, pentane and 2-methylbutane are position isomers of each other.

3. Geometrical Isomerism
In geometrical isomerism, isomers have the same molecular formula and the same connectivity of atoms but differ in the arrangement of atoms in space due to restricted rotation around a double bond. Alkanes do not contain double bonds and hence cannot exhibit geometrical isomerism.

Answer

Therefore, the isomerism not exhibited by alkanes is geometrical isomerism, which is option C.
