Ore containing both iron and copper:

Chalcopyrite is an ore that contains both iron and copper. It is a copper iron sulfide mineral and one of the most abundant copper ores. The chemical formula of chalcopyrite is CuFeS2.

Properties of Chalcopyrite:

- Chalcopyrite has a metallic luster and a brassy-yellow color.
- It has a hardness of 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale.
- The density of chalcopyrite is about 4.1-4.3 g/cm3.
- It is insoluble in water but soluble in nitric acid and sulfuric acid.

Extraction of Copper and Iron from Chalcopyrite:

Chalcopyrite is mined and then crushed to a fine powder. The powder is then mixed with water and chemicals such as lime and xanthate. The mixture is then agitated, and air is blown through it to produce bubbles. The bubbles attach themselves to the copper minerals, and the mineral particles rise to the surface, forming a froth. The froth is skimmed off, and the copper is extracted from it.

The iron in chalcopyrite is not easily extracted and usually ends up in the waste slag. To extract iron from chalcopyrite, the ore is first roasted in a furnace at a temperature of about 800°C. This converts the iron sulfide in the ore to iron oxide, which can be easily extracted.

Conclusion:

Chalcopyrite is an important copper ore that also contains iron. It is mined and processed to extract copper, while the iron is usually discarded as waste slag.
