The following observations were taken during reciprocal levelling to find the difference in elevation between two points P and Q, located on either banks of a wide river. If the reduced level of the point P is +60 m, determine the reduced level of the point Q?
  • a)
    +59.4 m
  • b)
    +60.5 m
  • c)
    +59.45 m
  • d)
    +60.55 m
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
The following observations were taken during reciprocal levelling to f...
The true difference between levels P and Q, by using the concept of reciprocal leveling, is given as:

Where a and b are readings taken when the instrument is at or near P and c and d are readings when the instrument is at or near Q.
RL of point  Q = RL of Point P – h
Calculation:
a = 1.96 and b = 1.36 m; c = 2.02 m and d = 1.52 m
On substituting the values of a, b, c, and d in the above formula, we get

h = 0.55 m
Now, the Reduced Level of point Q is calculated as:
RL of Q = 60 – 0.55 = 59.45 m
