Classification of Matter

Matter can be classified on the basis of its physical and chemical properties. It can be classified into three types:

1. Elements

Elements are the simplest form of matter and cannot be broken down into simpler substances. They are made up of atoms of the same type.

Examples: Oxygen, Hydrogen, Carbon, Iron, etc.

2. Compounds

Compounds are substances made up of two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio. They can be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.

Examples: Water (H2O), Sodium Chloride (NaCl), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), etc.

3. Mixtures

Mixtures are made up of two or more substances physically combined together. They can be separated by physical means. Mixtures are classified into two types:

- Homogeneous Mixtures: In these mixtures, the composition is uniform throughout.

Examples: Saltwater, Air, Sugar solution, etc.

- Heterogeneous Mixtures: In these mixtures, the composition is not uniform throughout.

Examples: Sand and water, Oil and water, Concrete, etc.
