Solution:

Given,

Volume of hydrogen = 12 L

Volume of chlorine = 11.2 L

The balanced equation for the reaction between hydrogen and chlorine is:

H2(g) + Cl2(g) → 2HCl(g)

Volume of hydrogen and chlorine are in the ratio of 1:1.

So, the limiting reagent is either hydrogen or chlorine, whichever is present in lesser amount.

So, chlorine is the limiting reagent in this case.

The amount of chlorine required to react with 12 L of hydrogen is:

1 volume of hydrogen = 1 volume of chlorine

12 volumes of hydrogen = 12 volumes of chlorine

But, only 11.2 L of chlorine is present.

So, all the chlorine will be consumed in the reaction and excess hydrogen will be left unreacted.

The amount of hydrogen left unreacted can be calculated as:

Volume of hydrogen left unreacted = Volume of hydrogen - Volume of chlorine used

= 12 L - 11.2 L

= 0.8 L

The volume of HCl formed can be calculated by using the balanced chemical equation:

1 volume of hydrogen = 1 volume of HCl

12 volumes of hydrogen = 12 volumes of HCl

So, 12 L of hydrogen will react to form 12 L of HCl.

The volume of HCl formed due to the reaction between 11.2 L of chlorine and 12 L of hydrogen is:

Volume of HCl formed = 2 × Volume of chlorine used

= 2 × 11.2 L

= 22.4 L

Therefore, the composition in volume of the mixture will be:

- 0.8 L of unreacted hydrogen
- 22.4 L of HCl formed
