Calculation of Oxygen Required for Combustion of Benzene

Given:
Mass of Liquid Benzene (C6H6) = 39 g

To Find:
Volume of Oxygen required for complete combustion of Benzene

Solution:

Step 1: Calculate the moles of benzene

Molecular mass of Benzene (C6H6) = (6 x 12.01) + (6 x 1.01) = 78.11 g/mol
Moles of Benzene (C6H6) = Mass/Molar mass = 39/78.11 = 0.4999 mol

Step 2: Calculate the moles of oxygen required for complete combustion of benzene

From the balanced chemical equation,
2 C6H6 + 15 O2 → 12 CO2 + 6 H2O
For 2 moles of Benzene, 15 moles of Oxygen is required.
Hence, for 0.4999 mol of Benzene, the moles of Oxygen required = (15/2) x 0.4999 = 3.748 mol

Step 3: Convert moles to volume of oxygen

Volume of gas (Oxygen) = Moles x Molar volume at STP
Molar volume at STP = 22.4 L/mol
Therefore, Volume of Oxygen required = 3.748 x 22.4 = 83.97 L

Final Answer:
The volume of oxygen required for complete combustion of 39 g of liquid benzene is 84 L (approx). Hence, the correct option is (d) 84.
