The enthalpy change (ΔH) for the formation of carbon monoxide from its elements can be calculated using the standard enthalpies of formation for carbon monoxide (ΔHf CO), carbon (ΔHf C), and oxygen (ΔHf O2).

Standard enthalpy change for the reaction:
ΔH = ΣΔHf(products) - ΣΔHf(reactants)
Given:
ΔHf CO = -110.5 kJ/mol
ΔHf C = 0 kJ/mol
ΔHf O2 = 0 kJ/mol
Therefore, ΔH = ΔHf CO - (ΔHf C + 0.5ΔHf O2)

Calculation of ΔU:
ΔU = ΔH - ΔnRT
where,
Δn = (sum of moles of products) - (sum of moles of reactants)

Given:
R = 8.314 kJ/mol-K
T = 298 K
ΔU = -110.5 kJ/mol - (0.5 mol)(8.314 kJ/mol-K)(298 K)
ΔU = -110.5 kJ/mol - 1238.78 kJ/mol
ΔU = -1349.28 kJ/mol

ΔH - ΔU:
ΔH - ΔU = (-110.5 kJ/mol) - (-1349.28 kJ/mol)
ΔH - ΔU = 1238.78 kJ/mol
