Extra Questions of Chapter 1 Class 9 Science

1. What is matter? Explain its characteristics.

Matter refers to anything that occupies space and has mass. All the things around us, including living and non-living things, are made up of matter. Matter has the following characteristics:

  • Mass and Volume: Matter has mass, which is the amount of matter present in it, and volume, which is the space occupied by it.

  • Physical State: Matter exists in three states- solid, liquid, and gas. The physical state depends on the temperature and pressure.

  • Compressibility and Rigidity: Solids have a definite shape and volume and are rigid. Liquids have a definite volume but no definite shape and are less rigid than solids. Gases have neither a definite shape nor volume and are highly compressible.

  • Inertia: Matter has the property of inertia, which means it resists any change in its state of motion.

  • Impermeability: Matter is either permeable or impermeable. Solids are impermeable, liquids are partially permeable, and gases are highly permeable.

2. What are the physical and chemical changes? Explain with examples.

Physical Changes:

  • Definition: Physical changes do not change the identity or composition of the substance. They only alter the physical state, size, shape, or appearance of matter.

  • Examples: Melting of ice, boiling of water, crushing of a can, cutting of hair, etc.

Chemical Changes:

  • Definition: Chemical changes result in the formation of a new substance with new physical and chemical properties. They involve a rearrangement of atoms and molecules.

  • Examples: Burning of wood, rusting of iron, digestion of food, etc.

3. What is the difference between a mixture and a compound?

Mixture:

  • Definition: A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined and can be separated by physical methods.

  • Composition: A mixture retains the individual properties of its components, and the composition can vary.

  • Examples: Air, saltwater, soil, etc.

Compound:

  • Definition: A compound is a pure substance made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a fixed proportion.

  • Composition: A compound has a fixed composition and properties that are different from its constituent elements.

  • Examples: Water (H2O), sodium chloride (NaCl), carbon dioxide (CO2), etc.

4. Explain the law of conservation of mass.

The law of conservation of mass states that the total mass of the reactants in a chemical reaction is equal to the total mass of the products. In other words, the mass of matter cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical
