The Salt March and the Civil Disobedience Movement:
  • In salt, Mahatma Gandhi found a powerful symbol that could unite the nation.
  • Thus he sent a letter to Viceroy Irwin stating eleven demands on 31 January 1930.
  • Demand to abolish the salt tax was the most stirring of all.
  • Mahatma Gandhi declared that the tax on salt and the government monopoly over its production revealed the most oppressive face of British rule.
  • ​Viceroy was unwilling to negotiate.
  • So accompanied by 78 of his trusted volunteers, Mahatma Gandhi started his famous salt march.
  • From Gandhiji’s ashram in Sabarmati to the Gujarati coastal town of Dandi, the march was for over 240 miles.
  • About 10 miles a day, the volunteers walked for 24 days.
  • After reached Dandi on 6 April they manufactured salt by boiling seawater and ceremonially violated the law.
