It is considered to be the forerunner of the Indian National Federation established in 1884
The first session of the Indian National Congress was held on December 28, 1885 at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit Vidyalaya in Bombay. It was presided over by Vyomas Chandra Banerjee.
In this conference, on the suggestion of Dadabhai Naoroji, the name of Indian National Association was changed to Indian National Congress.
The Viceroy at the time of the establishment of the Indian National Congress was Lord Dufferin. It ridiculed the Congress by saying that it was an "institution of micro-sighted minorities".
Lord Curzon had said that "Congress is faltering towards its downfall and he wishes that he could help in the peaceful death of Congress".
