  • As every atom tries to reach the octet configuration (8 Electrons in Outer most orbit) and thereby has a full outer shell.
  • Each shell can contain only a fixed number of electrons. The general formula is that the nth shell can in principle holds up to 2n2 electrons.
  • An element attains stability when it achieves either a duplet or octet configuration.
  • An octet configuration means that the outermost orbit/ Valence shell of electrons has 8 electrons in it and the duplet has 2 electrons in its outermost orbit/ Valence shell.
  • An example of both duplet and octet configuration is water (H2O) in which oxygen gets its octet configuration and Hydrogen gets its duplet configuration.
