Structure of the Kidneys

Cortex: The outer layer of the kidney, which contains the glomeruli and proximal and distal tubules.

Medulla: The inner layer of the kidney, which contains the renal pyramids and loops of Henle.

Pelvis: The central area of the kidney that collects urine and connects to the ureter.

Nephrons: The functional units of the kidney, which filter blood and produce urine.

Urine Formation

Filtration: Blood is filtered through the glomeruli, which removes waste products and excess fluid.

Reabsorption: Useful substances such as glucose, amino acids, and electrolytes are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.

Secretion: Additional waste products and excess ions are secreted into the urine.

Excretion: Urine is excreted from the kidney into the ureter and then transported to the bladder for storage and eventual elimination through the urethra.
