Or this is better ,,,,,the Convict says that he is an experienced person, he knows how the people make excuses and trap others. he thinks that the Bishop will play a trick on him ,so he ordered the Bishop to stay because he could not trust anyone . he did not want anyone to report to the police and get him arrested.
