What will be the length of side AC in a triangle ABC?
I. The angle bisector of angle A divides the opposite side in ratio 2 : 3.
II. The length of side AB is 12 cm.
  • a)
Choose this option if the Question can be answered by one of the Statements alone but not by the other.
  • b)
Choose this option if the Question can be answered by either Statement alone.
  • c)
Choose this option if the Question can be answered by using both Statements together, but cannot be answered by using either Statement alone.

Given below is a question and two statements numbered I and II given b...
From statement I:
The angle bisector of angle A divides the opposite side in ratio 2:3. Knowing this, length of side AC cannot be found.
∴ Statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
From statement II:
The length of side AB is 12 cm. Knowing length of side AB, length of side AC cannot be found.
∴ Statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
From statements I and II together:
The length of side AB is 12 cm. The angle bisector of angle A divides the opposite side in ratio 2:3. So, ratio of sides containing angle A will be 2:3. But it cannot be said whether, AB:AC = 2:3 or AC:AB = 2:3.
Using the value of length of side AB, we get different lengths of side AC in two cases.
∴The length of side AC cannot be uniquely found.
∴ Even using both the statements together, we cannot answer the given question.
