The group number, number of valence electrons, and valency of an element with the atomic number 17, respectively, are 17, 7 and 1 respectively .
Atomic number – 17
Electronic configuration – 1s22s22p63s23p5
Group number - ns electron + 10 + p electrons = 2 + 10 + 5 = 17 ,Valence electrons – 3s23p5 = 7 ,Valency – 1
Valence electrons -
Valence electrons are the electrons that are located in the outermost shell of an atom. In other words, these are the electrons that can be gained or lost during a chemical reaction.
Valency
  • The combining capacity of an atom is known as its valency
  • According to the octet rule, a compound is said to be stable when the outermost shell of the compound is having eight electrons. If the number of electrons in the outer shell is between one to four, the compound is said to have positive valency.
  • For example – Magnesium – Valence electrons – 2 , Valency - 2
  • For compounds with electrons four, five, six, or seven, the valency is determined by subtracting the electron from eight.
  • For example – Nitrogen –Valence electrons – 5,Valency - 3
  • All noble gases except for Helium have eight electrons Therefore , valency = 0
