The Statue of Liberty was designed and built in France. It was a gift from the people of France to the United States to commemorate the centennial of American independence. The statue was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who also designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The statue was then disassembled and shipped to the United States, where it was reassembled on Liberty Island in New York Harbor and dedicated on October 28, 1886. It has since become one of the most recognizable symbols of freedom and democracy worldwide.
