A train is hauled by a 2-8-2 locomotive with 22.5 tonne load on each driving axle. Assuming the coefficient of rail wheel to be 0.25, what would be the hauling capacity of the locomotive?
  • a)
    15.0 tonne
  • b)
    22.5 tonne
  • c)
    45.0 tonne
  • d)
    90.0 tonne
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A train is hauled by a 2-8-2 locomotive with 22.5 tonne load on each d...
Hauling Capacity of a Locomotive:
(i) It can be defined as the total load that can be handled by the locomotive.
(ii) It is indicative of power available to a locomotive.
(iii) It can be computed as the product of the coefficient of friction between driving wheels and rails and the weight on the driving wheels.
It can be calculated by the following:
Hauling capacity = μwn
Where,
μ = Coefficient of friction, w = weight on driving axle,
n = number of pairs of driving wheels
Calculation:
Given,
μ = 0.25, w = 22.5 tonne, n = 4
∴ Hauling capcaity = μwn = 0.25 × 22.5 × 4 = 22.5 tonne
