c) Split tensile strength
d) Modulus of rupture
The correct sequence in increasing order of these strength is:-
  • a)
    c - d - a - b
  • b)
    d - c - a - b
  • c)
    c - d - b - a

Concrete:
  • It is the term used to indicate the paste formed by the addition of water in a specified proportion in a mixture of binding material, fine aggregate, coarse aggregates, and admixture (if required).
  • Concrete = Binding material + Fine aggregate + Coarse aggregate + Water
Compressive strength test:
  • Compressive strength of concrete is tested by preparing the mould of different shape which may be either cubical and cylindrical.
  • Generally, cube size of 15×15×15 cm3 is used for testing and the size of the cylindrical is 15 cm diameter and 30 cm height.
  • The result obtains from cylindrical mould are found to be closer to actual strength than the result obtained from cubical mould because cubical mould comparatively more affected by the plate of the compressive testing machine.
  • The result obtains from the cylindrical mould is approx 0.85 times from cubical mould.
Tensile strength test:
The tensile strength can be farmed by any of the following methods;
  • Flexural tensile strength test
  • Splitting cylinder test
Flexural tensile strength test:
  • Modulus of rupture indicates the Flexural tensile strength.
  • In order to find the modulus of rupture beam size 15 cm× 15 cm× 70 cm is prepared.
  • Then beam is subjected to a two-point load and magnitude at which it shows the sign of failure is note down and find the modulus of rupture.
  • Modulus of rupture = 0.7√fck

Splitting cylindrical test:
  • The cylindrical sample is laid horizontal and it is subjected to the compressive load in the UTM machine.
  • During this tensile stress is developed in the middle 5/6 portion of the section of the cylinder due to which its failure takes place.
  • This test gives a more uniform and accurate result.
  • The greatest advantage of this test is the same sample is used to find the compressive strength of the concrete.
