For the following outer sphere electron transfer reactions,

The rate constants are 10-6 M-1S-1 and 10-6 M-1S-1 respectively. The difference in rate constants is due to
  • a)
A change from high spin to low spin in Co* and high spin to low spin in Ru*
  • b)
A change from high spin to low spin in Co* and low spin to high spin in Ru*
  • c)
A change from low spin to high spin in Co* and the low spin state remains unchanged in Ru*
  • d)
A change from low spin to high spin in Co* and high spin to low spin in Ru*
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

For the given reaction
[Co(NH3)6]2+ + [Co*(NH3)6]3+ → [Co(NH3)6]3+ + [Co*(NH3)6]2+
  • As both the reactants are kinetically inert and the left or right-hand side of the reaction are identical, the electron transfer reaction takes place by self-exchange outer sphere mechanism.
  • Self-exchange electron transfer reaction which involves the greater change in Metal-Ligand bond length from one oxidation state to another slower will be the rate of electron transfer reaction.
  • Now, the electron transfer reaction between  [Co(NH3 )6]2+ and [*Co(NH3 )6]3+ not only involves a change in M-L bond length but also involves a change in spin state.
  • [Co(NH3 )6]2+ is high spin d7 (t52ge2g) and [Co*(NH3 )6]3+ is low spin d6 (t62ge0g). Transfer of an electron between the exited state leads to the configuration of t52ge1g for [*Co(NH3 )6]3+ and t62ge1g for [Co(NH3 )6]2+.
  • In this case, the spin states change from low spin to high spin in Co*.
  • In such cases the activation energy for the electron transfer is high and the rate of the reaction is very slow and the rate constant of the reaction is 10-6 M-1S-1.
Also, for the given reaction
[Ru(NH3)6]2+ + [Ru*(NH3)6]3+ → [Ru(NH3)6]3+ + [Ru*(NH3)6]2+
  • The electron transfer reaction between [Ru(NH3)6]2+ and [Ru*(NH3)6]3+ only involves a change in M-L bond length.
  • [Ru(NH3)6]2+ is low spin d(t62ge0g) and [Ru*(NH3)6]3+ is low spin d5 (t52ge0g). Transfer of an electron between the exited state leads to the configuration of t52ge0g for [Ru(NH3)6]3+ and t62ge0g for [Ru*(NH3 )6]2+.
  • Thus, there is no change in the spin state involved and the low spin state remains unchanged in Ru*.
  • In such cases the activation energy for the electron transfer is high and the rate of the reaction is very slow and the rate constant of the reaction is 10-6 M-1S-1.
Hence, for the two following outer sphere electron transfer reactions the difference in rate constants is due to a change from low spin to high spin in Co* and the low spin state remains unchanged in Ru*.
