**Electric current is the flow of electrons.**

Electric current is the flow of charged particles through a conductor. These charged particles are known as electric charges. In most cases, the charged particles that carry electric current are electrons.

**Conduction of Electricity in Metals**

Metals are good conductors of electricity. In a metal, there are many free electrons that are not bound to any specific atom. These free electrons can move easily through the metal lattice when a potential difference is applied across the conductor. This movement of electrons constitutes an electric current.

**Flow of Electrons**

When a potential difference is applied across a conductor, the negative terminal of the power source repels the free electrons in the conductor. This repulsion causes the electrons to move towards the positive terminal of the power source. As a result, a continuous flow of electrons is established in the conductor, creating an electric current.

**Direction of Electric Current**

The direction of electric current is defined as the direction of the flow of positive charges. However, in reality, the flow of current is due to the movement of negatively charged electrons. So, the direction of electric current is opposite to the direction of electron flow.

**Consequences of Electric Current**

Electric current has several important consequences, including:

1. Generation of heat: When electric current flows through a conductor, it encounters resistance, which causes the conductor to heat up. This is the principle behind the operation of electric heaters and electric stoves.

2. Magnetic effect: Electric current produces a magnetic field around the conductor. This principle is utilized in the operation of electromagnets and electric motors.

3. Chemical effect: Electric current can cause chemical reactions to occur. This is the basis for electroplating, electrolysis, and other electrochemical processes.

4. Luminous effect: Electric current flowing through a filament in an incandescent bulb causes it to become hot and emit light.

In conclusion, electric current is the flow of electrons through a conductor. The movement of these negatively charged particles in response to a potential difference creates the flow of electric current.
