The function SCI is defined as SCI(x, y) = z, where z is the sum of y consecutive positive integers starting from positive integer x. If a and n are positive integers, is SCI(a,n) divisible by n?
(1) 3n +2a  is not divisible by 2
(2) 3a +2n  is divisible by 2
  • a)
Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.
  • b)
Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.
  • c)
BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question asked, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.
  • d)
EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.
  • e)
Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data specific to the problem are needed.
Correct answer is 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

The function SCI is defined as SCI(x, y) = z, where z is the sum of y ...
Qn is simply asking whether n is even or odd
SCI(a,n)= n/2(2a+(n-1))
so is 2a + (n-1) div by 2
that implies is n-1 div by 2
that implies is n odd (because n>a, so n can't be 1.

statement 1# 3n+2a not div by 2
but 2a is div by 2
that implies 3n is not div by 2
that implies n is not even ,and we know n is +be Integer
so n is odd so sufficient

statement 2# 3a+2n div by 2
2n is already div by 2
so we can't say value of n whether odd or even
so not sufficient.
