Let the opening stock be x.
According to the question,
Average stock = (Opening stock + Closing stock) / 2
=> 20,000 = (x + (x+4,000)) / 2
=> 20,000 = (2x + 4,000) / 2
=> 20,000 * 2 = 2x + 4,000
=> 40,000 = 2x + 4,000
=> 2x = 40,000 - 4,000
=> 2x = 36,000
=> x = 18,000
Therefore, opening stock = Rs. 18,000
Closing stock = Opening stock + Rs. 4,000
= 18,000 + 4,000
= Rs. 22,000
