A 20m chain was found to be 6cm too long after chaining a distance of 2000m. It was tested again at the end of work and found to be 9cm too long after chaining a total distance of 5000m. If the chain was correct before the commencement of the work, find the true distance.?
Most Upvoted Answer
A 20m chain was found to be 6cm too long after chaining a distance of ...
Solution:

Given data:
- Length of the chain = 20m
- Error after chaining 2000m = 6cm
- Error after chaining 5000m = 9cm

Let x be the true distance.

Calculating the constant error:
- For the first case, the error per meter is 6cm/2000m = 0.003m/m
- For the second case, the error per meter is 9cm/5000m = 0.0018m/m
- The constant error is the difference between these two errors, which is 0.003m/m - 0.0018m/m = 0.0012m/m

Finding the true distance:
- Let L be the length measured by the chain after chaining x meters.
- The actual length measured by the chain is L + 0.0012x
- According to the given data, the chain was found to be 6cm too long after chaining 2000m. So, L + 0.0012(2000) = x + 0.06
- Similarly, the chain was found to be 9cm too long after chaining 5000m. So, L + 0.0012(5000) = x + 0.09
- Solving these two equations simultaneously, we get x = 4500m
Therefore, the true distance measured by the chain is 4500 meters.
