In this question, it has been asked about the signs of velocity and acceleration not about the values of velocity and acceleration.
So, if both the entities have same the signs, then the speed of the object will increase.
If it is accelerating in the positive direction, the negative velocity is decreasing, and the object is slowing down.

In such a case the speed of the particle will increase. I've got an example to explain this and hopefully it will clear your doubts. Think about throwing a ball vertically upwards with an initial velocity of say, 20 m/sec. Now, if we take the upward direction as positive then initial velocity of the ball is +20 m/sec and the acceleration due to gravity acts in the opposite direction i.e., vertically downwards and hence it becomes -10 m/sec^2 or 9.8 m/sec^2 to be precise. The ball will reach a maximum height where the final velocity of the ball will become zero. Think about it. The final velocity becomes 0 because there is something that opposes it's motion which in this case is g. Now, Let us assume that g acts in the same direction as the ball. In this case the value of g is +10 m/sec^2. What do you think will happen? Will g oppose the motion or help in motion? Ofcourse, it will help in increasing the speed. Hence, if velocity and acceleration acts in same direction, they will speed up a body.
