How to multiply every type of fraction?
How to Multiply Fractions
Multiplying Proper Fractions
- To multiply proper fractions, simply multiply the numerators together to get the new numerator, and multiply the denominators together to get the new denominator.
- For example, to multiply 1/2 by 2/3, you would do (1 x 2) / (2 x 3) = 2/6 or 1/3.
Multiplying Improper Fractions
- When multiplying improper fractions, follow the same rule as with proper fractions. Multiply the numerators together to get the new numerator, and multiply the denominators together to get the new denominator.
- For example, to multiply 5/4 by 3/2, you would do (5 x 3) / (4 x 2) = 15/8.
Multiplying Mixed Numbers
- To multiply mixed numbers, convert them into improper fractions first.
- Multiply the numerators of the improper fractions together to get the new numerator, and multiply the denominators together to get the new denominator.
- For example, to multiply 2 1/3 by 3 1/4, convert them to improper fractions (7/3 x 13/4) = 91/12.
Simplify the Result
- After multiplying, simplify the fraction if possible by finding the greatest common factor between the numerator and denominator and dividing both by it.
- For example, if you get 8/12 after multiplying, simplify it by dividing both the numerator and denominator by 4 to get 2/3.
By following these steps, you can easily multiply every type of fraction and simplify the result for easier understanding and comparison.
