As i have allready answered in one previous question that all the coal is classified on their content carbon.See there is 4 types of coal depending upon its carbon content.
1. Anthraciye containing 94% to 98% carbon
2. Bituminous containing 78% to 87% carbon
3. Lignite containing 28% to 30% carbon
4. Peat containing 27% or less than that.

Classification of Coal
Coal is a fossil fuel that is formed from the remains of plants that lived and died millions of years ago. It is primarily composed of carbon along with various other elements like hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. Coal is classified based on its carbon content, which determines its quality and suitability for specific applications.

Carbon Content
The carbon content of coal is the main factor that determines its classification. The higher the carbon content, the more energy-rich and valuable the coal is. The carbon content is primarily influenced by the type of plant material from which the coal was formed and the conditions under which it was buried and subjected to heat and pressure.

There are four main types of coal, classified based on their carbon content:

1. Anthracite Coal - Anthracite is the highest rank of coal and has the highest carbon content. It is a hard and brittle coal with a high energy content, making it the most valuable type of coal. Anthracite coal is primarily used for heating and electricity generation.

2. Bituminous Coal - Bituminous coal is the most commonly used type of coal. It has a moderate carbon content and a relatively high energy content. Bituminous coal is used for electricity generation, as a fuel in industrial processes, and for the production of coke, which is used in steelmaking.

3. Sub-bituminous Coal - Sub-bituminous coal has a lower carbon content than bituminous coal. It has a higher moisture content and a lower energy content. Sub-bituminous coal is used primarily for electricity generation.

4. Lignite Coal - Lignite coal is the lowest rank of coal and has the lowest carbon content. It is a soft and brownish coal with a high moisture content. Lignite coal is used for electricity generation and as a fuel in some industrial processes.

The classification of coal based on carbon content provides valuable information about its properties and potential uses. It helps in determining the efficiency and environmental impact of using different types of coal for various applications.
