Assertion: Zn2+ is diamagnetic.                                             [JEE 1998]
Reason: The electrons are lost from 4s orbital to form Zn2+.
  • a)
Both assertion and reason are correct and reason is the correct explanation of the assertion
  • b)
Both assertion and reason are correct but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
  • c)
Assertion is correct but reason is incorrect
  • d)
Assertion is incorrect but reason is correct
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Explanation:

Diamagnetism and Zn2+

Diamagnetic substances are those substances which do not possess any permanent magnetic moment. They are weakly repelled by a magnetic field. Zn2+ is a diamagnetic ion.

Reason for Diamagnetism of Zn2+

Zinc has an electronic configuration of [Ar] 3d10 4s2. When it loses two electrons to form Zn2+, it loses the 4s electrons and the electronic configuration becomes [Ar] 3d10. Since the d-orbitals are completely filled, there are no unpaired electrons in Zn2+ and hence it is diamagnetic.

Assertion and Reason

Assertion: Zn2 is diamagnetic.

Reason: The electrons are lost from 4s orbital to form Zn2.

Option B is correct as both assertion and reason are correct but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion. The reason given is incomplete and does not explain why Zn2+ is diamagnetic. The correct explanation is that Zn2+ is diamagnetic because it has a completely filled d-orbital which means there are no unpaired electrons.

Look if it is given a tag of JEE that doesn't mean it is a difficult problem for you or anybody. Now let's come to question, Remember the is an element is diamagnetic then it is due to the NO unpaired electron in its orbital but assertion is correct and reason should be NO UNPAIRED ELECTRONS. Though reason is differenct but it is also correct as when Zn will change to Zn^+2 electrons will be taken out from 4s orbital. Therefore, assertion and reason are both correct statement when they stand alone but when reason is took account on assertion demand then the reason is wrong. Hope it helps you.
