A boat is moving in a stream. What is the speed of the stream?
Statement I: The boat covers ‘7x’ km downstream in 3 hours and a distance of ‘5x’ km upstream in 5 hours.
Statement II: The boat covers 80 km in still water in 16 hours.
  • a)
If the data in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question while data in statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question
  • b)
If the data in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question while data in statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question

Let the still water speed be b and stream speed be c
Statement I: No data about the speed.
So, statement I alone is not sufficient.
Statement II: No data about the stream.
So, statement II alone is not sufficient.
Using both the statements:
(b + c) × 3 : (b – c) × 5 = 7 : 5
b : c = 5 : 2
Still water speed of the boat

As, b = 5 km/h, therefore c = 2 km/h
So, both the statements are together necessary.
Hence, option D is correct.
