If a body is allowed to freely fall from a height, its speed increases continuously. It is because:

  • a)
Air does not exert frictional force

  • b)
Magnetic force of earth increases its speed

  • c)
Gravitational force of earth increases its speed

  • d)
Pressure of air forces it downward

Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

If a body is allowed to freely fall from a height, its speed increases...
The gravitational force for a falling object is along the direction of motion. Hence, its speed increases continuously till  it touches the ground.

If a body is allowed to freely fall from a height, its speed increases...
Explanation:
When a body is allowed to freely fall from a height, it moves downwards due to the force of gravity. This force is directed towards the center of the earth and is known as gravitational force. The acceleration produced due to this force is called acceleration due to gravity (g).

The speed of the body increases continuously because of the following reasons:

Gravitational force:
As the body falls towards the earth, the distance between the body and the earth's center decreases. This leads to an increase in the gravitational force acting on the body. As a result, the acceleration due to gravity increases, which causes the velocity of the body to increase continuously.

Air resistance:
Air resistance is the force that opposes the motion of an object through the air. However, in the absence of air or in a vacuum, there is no air resistance. Therefore, this cannot be the reason for the continuous increase in the speed of the body.

Magnetic force:
The magnetic force of the earth is not responsible for the increase in the speed of the falling body. This force is very weak and cannot significantly affect the motion of the body.

Pressure of air:
The pressure of air is not responsible for the increase in the speed of the falling body. In fact, air pressure can slow down the motion of the body.

Conclusion:
Hence, we can conclude that the increase in the speed of a freely falling body is due to the increase in the gravitational force acting on the body.
