Effects of Modern Farming

Modern farming has brought about several changes in agriculture practices. Some of the effects of modern farming are:

Soil Degradation
Modern farming involves the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, which can lead to soil degradation. These chemicals can destroy the soil's structure, reduce its fertility, and make it prone to erosion.

Decrease in Groundwater
Modern farming practices require a large amount of water for irrigation. This has led to the depletion of groundwater resources, which can have a significant impact on the environment.

Water Pollution
The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in modern farming practices can lead to water pollution. These chemicals can seep into rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water, affecting the quality of water and the aquatic life.

Deforestation
Modern farming practices have led to the clearing of forests to create more farmland. This has led to deforestation, which can have a significant impact on the environment, including climate change.

One of the major reasons for water crisis in the country is that as the area of irrigated land has increased, the level of groundwater has declined.Currently, India has a gross irrigated crop area of 82.6 million hectares (215.6 million acres), which is the largest in the world. As the population increases, the water storage capacity of ponds decreases.
